STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE BRUTAL AND
SENSELESS KILLING OF
ROGERIO “ONNIE” MINGOY, JR.
We, the members of Lay Forum Philippines in the entire country, condemn the brutal and senseless killing of one of our active member of the National Coordinating Group and presently the Municipal Administrator of the Municipality of Baleno, Masbate, Rogerio “Onnie” Mingoy Jr.
On August 31, 2010 at 1:00 p.m., while Onnie, 54 years old, was riding his bicycle on his way to his office, an unknown assailant from behind riding a motorcycle shot Onnie twice at the back with his short firearm which instantaneously killed him. This happened at Barangay Potoson in front of the Municipal Cemetery, Municipality of Baleno, Masbate.
Onnie, as we fondly called him, was a Lay person with principles. He was a spiritual person, a man full of dignity. He always loved the poor, deprived and the oppressed. He is well known to us as a staunch activist opposing mining to be implemented in his municipality.
As a partner and active member of the Lay Forum Philippines, he is well loved. He will always ask questions during meetings that tickle our mind to think for the best options for our group and for the poor. For him the concerns of the poor, deprived and oppressed are also the concerns of the Lay Forum Philippines. He always encourages us to face issues confronting the laity. Oftentimes, telling us that he is proud to be a member of the Lay Forum Philippines because this group is one of the sources of his strength.
On the broad daylight last August 31, 2010, he was treacherously murdered.
“No greater love can be expressed than to lay down his life for his fellowmen and women.”
John 15:13
We will continue to struggle for the betterment and improvement of life for all. We will continue to work for Church Renewal and Social Transformation. We will always fill our memory with that of Onnie, our present-day Lay martyr and a hero. He is and always will be our inspiration of what a laity should be.
We support the local initiatives of his relatives and friends to call for justice.
Justice for Onnie!!!
Justice for All!!!
